Info

Great Dixter was the home of gardener and gardening writer Christopher Lloyd, who developed many innovative ideas those spread out worldwide. The garden of Great Dixter is considered to be one of the most beautiful gardens worldwide.

Fergus Garrett, the head gardener has worked since 1992 in close cooperation with Christopher Lloyd. After the death of his employer and fatherly friend in 2006, Fergus Garrett continues Lloyds efforts to reach a balanced ecological system. These days he works with a team of gardeners and students. Besides the daily garden work, they research about biological diversity.

The garden of Great Dixter is in many aspects remarkable. It´s unorthodox and very creative designed. Topiary, perennials, a long border, orchids- and wildflower meadows are characteristic for the garden. The garden is partitioned in various topics. Fergus Garrett experiments with unusual constellations of plants and colors. One of the most important aspects he learned from Lloyd is to be mindful, he explains, to study the plants and animals. „We have to do what is right for the insects and plants.“ Grasses and perennials grow over small paths, different plants grow side by side and there are a lot of insects. The result is an amazing garden with a very special charm. Great Dixter is a perfect place for plants, birds and insects.
